The Cottage and Chapel date back to 1611 and were built by the owner of the farm at the time. The Chapel is beautifully constructed from stone and flint and is located within the garden. It was last used as a Chapel around 1847. The Cottage was then reinstated and rendered, giving it the appearance of a newer building.

During the Second World War, after the Battle of Britain, when plans commenced for the invasion of France, the Cottage and Chapel became part of Operation Hadrian and formed one of the eighty two advanced landing grounds in the South of England with a number of British and Norwegian squadrons based here. The Cottage was used as the Paymaster’s and Flight Control offices. During the time of the Norwegians, Crown Prince Olav visited and stayed in the Cottage. Clarke Gable was another famous visitor - he was shot at whilst flying across the Channel and had to make an emergency landing here.

Mustangs, Typhoons and Spitfires all used the airfield and, at the height of its use, nearly one hundred planes, including Avro Ansons, ferried the casualties from D Day and carried plasma to Normandy. A local brewery used to fill an empty Spitfire bomb with beer before it was delivered to France to the great delight of the troops.

The front porch of the Chapel was knocked out to allow aircraft engines to be repaired inside, as was the the south side of the Cottage to gain more visibility of the runway. But it has all been lovingly and tastefully restored and we now look forward to welcoming you and making your stay with us truly exceptional.
